  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/4 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • to taste Salt and pepper
For the gravy
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp mustard
  • 1 tbsp flour
  • 1 tbsp oil for cooking

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined—don’t overwork the meat.
  2. Form this mixture into four oval-shaped patties.
Cooking
  1. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the patties to the skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side, until browned and cooked through.
  3. Remove them from the skillet and set aside.
Making the gravy
  1. In the same skillet, whisk in the flour and allow it to cook for about 1 minute until golden brown.
  2. Slowly stir in the beef broth, ketchup, and mustard.
  3. Bring to a simmer, allowing it to thicken for 2-3 minutes.
Combining
  1. Return the patties to the skillet, spoon the gravy over them, and simmer for a couple more minutes.
Serving
  1. Plate your Salisbury Steak with a generous amount of gravy on top. Pair with mashed potatoes or steamed veggies for a complete meal.

Notes

To ensure juicy patties, avoid pressing down on them while cooking. Meal prep is easy; cooked patties can be stored for up to 3 days and frozen for up to 3 months.
