Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Wet Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup milk Can substitute with almond or oat milk.
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted Can substitute with coconut oil for dairy-free.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For Frying and Serving
  • Cooking oil for frying
  • Powdered sugar for dusting Optional: add nutmeg or cinnamon for extra flavor.

Method

Prepare the Dough
  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, and ground nutmeg until well combined.
Mix Wet Ingredients
  1. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs and then add in the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Stir until mixed.
Combine
  1. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Mix gently with a spatula until just combined; be careful not to overmix. You want a soft, slightly sticky dough.
Shape the Donuts
  1. On a floured surface, roll the dough to about 1/2-inch thickness. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out your donuts. Gather the scraps and re-roll them to cut more hearts.
Fry the Donuts
  1. Heat the cooking oil in a deep pot over medium heat. Carefully drop the donuts into the hot oil. Fry them for about 2-3 minutes on each side until they are golden brown.
Drain
  1. Using a slotted spoon, carefully remove the donuts from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.
Dust and Serve
  1. Once the donuts are slightly cooled, dust them with powdered sugar and enjoy!

Notes

Store Heart Donuts in an airtight container at room temperature for 1-2 days or freeze for up to 1 month. To reheat, use a toaster oven at a low temperature.
