Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8-inch square baking dish or line with parchment paper.
- In a medium saucepan over low heat, melt the unsalted butter, being careful not to burn it.
- Remove from heat and stir in the granulated sugar until well combined. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
- Stir in the vanilla extract, then the cocoa powder, flour, salt, and baking powder until just combined. If using, fold in chocolate chips.
- Pour the brownie batter into the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly.
Baking
- Place in the oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes until edges pull away from the sides and a toothpick comes out with moist crumbs.
Cooling and Serving
- Allow brownies to cool in the pan on a wire rack before slicing into squares. Serve warm or at room temperature.
Notes
For extra flavor, consider using coconut oil in place of butter. To store, keep in an airtight container for up to five days or freeze for up to three months. Reheat in the microwave or oven to restore texture.
