Preparation
- In a large mixing bowl, add 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Combine these dry ingredients thoroughly.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together 1 cup of milk and 1 large egg. Gradually pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients, stirring gently until a sticky dough forms.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead gently for about 1 minute, just until it is smooth. Avoid over-kneading, as this can make the bites tough.
- In a deep pan or skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat. You will need enough oil to submerge the dough bites about halfway.
- With your hands, pinch off small pieces of dough and roll them into balls or flatter shapes, depending on your preference.
Frying
- Once the oil is hot, gently drop the dough pieces into the oil, frying them in batches. Fry each side for about 2-3 minutes until they are golden brown.
- Remove the fried bites using a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to absorb the excess oil. Serve warm with your preferred toppings!
Notes
For gluten-free options, substitute all-purpose flour with a gluten-free baking blend. Experiment with spices like cinnamon or cardamom for variations. Proper oil temperature is crucial for the best results.
