  • 4 large potatoes, thinly sliced Use starchy or waxy potatoes for best results.
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced Sweet onions work well for flavor.
  • 2 cups heavy cream You can substitute with half-and-half for a lighter version.
  • 2 cups grated cheese (Gruyère or similar) Feel free to mix different cheeses for unique flavors.
  • to taste Salt and pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Butter for greasing Use to coat the baking dish.

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease a large baking dish with butter.
Layering and Baking
  1. Start by layering thinly sliced potatoes at the bottom of the dish and season with salt and pepper.
  2. Add a layer of onions followed by a little cream.
  3. Repeat the layering process until all ingredients are used up, finishing with a generous layer of cream.
  4. Sprinkle the grated cheese over the top.
  5. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  6. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  7. Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Let cool slightly before slicing to prevent falling apart. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days or freeze for a month.
