Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 cup cooked lentils
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 1 small onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 medium carrot (grated)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • to taste Salt and pepper
  • Oil for frying Use enough to coat the bottom of the pan

Method

Preparation
  1. Start by cooking your lentils if you haven’t done so already. They should be tender but not mushy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the cooked lentils, bread crumbs, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, grated carrot, and egg.
Seasoning
  1. Sprinkle in cumin, a pinch of salt, and pepper. Mix everything together until you achieve a well-combined mixture.
Forming the Patties
  1. With your hands, take a portion of the mixture and shape it into patties, around 2-3 inches in diameter.
Cooking
  1. In a skillet, heat oil over medium heat.
  2. Once the oil is hot, carefully place the patties in the pan. Cook each side for about 4-5 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
Serving
  1. Remove the patties and drain on paper towels. Serve warm with your choice of toppings.

Notes

For an egg-free version, use flaxseed meal mixed with water as a binder. Let cooked lentils cool before mixing for better shape retention. Don't skip the bread crumbs, as they're essential for binding and texture. Reheat in a skillet with a bit of oil for best results.
