Ingredients
  

For the patties
  • 1 pound ground beef Use lean ground beef for best results
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped Can use yellow or white onion
  • 1 large egg Acts as a binder
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce Adds umami flavor
  • to taste Salt and pepper Adjust according to preference
For the gravy
  • 2 cups beef broth Low sodium recommended
  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced Any variety of mushrooms can be used
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch For thickening the gravy
  • 2 tablespoons water For mixing with cornstarch

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, bread crumbs, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
  2. Shape the mixture into 4 equal-sized patties, about 1-inch thick.
Cooking
  1. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and sear for 3 to 4 minutes on each side until browned. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  2. In the same skillet, add sliced mushrooms and sauté for about 2 minutes. Pour in the beef broth, scraping up any browned bits.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together cornstarch and water until smooth. Add this mixture to the gravy and stir until it thickens.
  4. Return the cooked patties to the skillet, cover, and simmer in the gravy for about 5 minutes.
Serving
  1. Serve the Salisbury steak warm with mashed potatoes or rice to soak up the gravy.

Notes

For meal prep, store in an airtight container for up to 3 days in the fridge or freeze for up to 2 months. Reheat gently.
