Ingredients

For the Dough
  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 0.25 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
For the Filling
  • 0.5 cup fruit jam or preserves (e.g., apricot, raspberry) Use your favorite flavor

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and sugar. Add the cold, cubed butter and mix until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Add the egg and salt to the bowl and stir until a dough forms.
  4. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 15 minutes.
  5. Roll out the dough on a floured surface until it reaches about 1/4 inch in thickness.
  6. Place the rolled dough into a tart pan or pie dish, pressing down gently.
  7. Spread your choice of fruit jam or preserves evenly over the base.
  8. Roll out any leftover dough for strips and create a lattice pattern over the filling if desired.
Baking
  1. Bake in your preheated oven for 30-40 minutes or until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbling.
  2. Allow the Crostata to cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

For perfecting Crostata, consider substitutions for butter and flour. Keep a close eye while baking to prevent over-baking, and avoid overworking the dough for a tender crust. For leftovers, store in an airtight container and consume within 2-3 days.
