- Gather your mixing bowl, electric mixer, and spatula.
- In a large mixing bowl, add the softened unsalted butter. Beat it with an electric mixer on medium speed until creamy and smooth, about 1-2 minutes.
- Gradually add powdered sugar, mixing on low until fully combined.
- Add the unsweetened cocoa powder and blend until well mixed.
- Pour in the milk and vanilla extract. Beat on medium-high speed for another 1-3 minutes until the frosting is light and fluffy.
- If the frosting is too thick, add more milk, one tablespoon at a time. If too runny, gradually add more powdered sugar.
Notes
Store any leftover frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. Allow to sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before using. Re-whip if too firm.
