Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain excess fat if necessary.
- Add the taco seasoning to the cooked beef and follow the package instructions, usually adding a bit of water. Stir and let simmer for about 5 minutes.
Layering
- In a large baking dish, layer half of the tortilla chips at the bottom.
- Spread half of the refried beans over the chips.
- Layer half of the beef mixture followed by a generous amount of salsa.
- Add one cup of shredded cheese on top.
- Repeat the process with the remaining tortilla chips, beans, beef, salsa, and finish with the remaining cheese.
Baking
- Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
- Allow it to cool for a few minutes, then top with sour cream and chopped green onions before serving.
Notes
For a healthier version, consider using turkey or chicken instead of ground beef. You can also opt for low-fat cheese or Greek yogurt instead of sour cream. Ensure even distribution of layers for balanced flavor in every bite.
