Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 block firm tofu (14 oz), pressed and sliced into steaks
  • 2 teaspoons black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce (ensure it’s Halal-certified)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, minced
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (to taste)
  • Green onions, finely chopped (for garnish)

Method

Preparation
  1. Press the tofu to remove excess moisture, then slice it into equal-sized steaks, about 1-inch thick.
Marinating
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine soy sauce, minced garlic, minced ginger, and black pepper. Add the sliced tofu and let it marinate for at least 10 minutes.
Coating
  1. Carefully coat each marinated tofu steak with cornstarch for a crispy exterior.
Cooking
  1. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the tofu steaks and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown and crispy.
Serving
  1. Remove the tofu from the heat, sprinkle with salt, garnish with chopped green onions, and serve immediately.

Notes

Tofu can be substituted with coconut aminos for a soy-free option. Ensure the oil is hot to maintain crispiness. Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for 2 months.
