Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 3 cups sliced apples (fresh, or canned)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 box yellow cake mix
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional) For added crunch, optional
  • to taste Vanilla ice cream (for serving, optional) Highly recommended for serving

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Begin by preparing an appropriate baking dish (9×13 inch works well) by greasing it lightly if desired.
  2. Slice the apples into moderate-sized pieces, making sure to remove any seeds. If you’re using canned apples, ensure they are drained well.
  3. In a mixing bowl, toss the sliced apples with granulated sugar and ground cinnamon until they are evenly coated. Spread this mixture evenly onto the bottom of your greased baking dish.
  4. Next, sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix evenly over the apples, ensuring all the apples are covered.
  5. Pour the melted butter slowly and evenly over the top of the cake mix layer. Do not stir; just let it sit!
  6. If you are using walnuts, sprinkle them on top at this point.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 40 to 45 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the apples are bubbly.
  8. Once done, allow it to cool for a few minutes, then serve warm, preferably with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Notes

If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. To reheat, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and warm for about 15-20 minutes.
