Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 2 cups stale bread, cubed Use dense bread for best results.
  • 2 pieces apples, peeled and diced
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3 pieces eggs
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup raisins (optional)
  • as needed Butter for greasing Use unsalted butter.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish with butter to prevent sticking.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cubed bread and diced apples. If using raisins, toss them in with the bread and apples.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the milk, sugar, eggs, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth.
  4. Pour the custard mixture over the bread and apple mixture, ensuring all pieces are well soaked. Let it sit for about 10 minutes to absorb.
Baking
  1. Pour the mixture into your greased baking dish and bake for 45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the pudding is set.
  2. Allow it to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy it warm or at room temperature, perhaps topped with whipped cream.

Notes

You can customize with alternate fruits like pears or berries. Use this recipe to repurpose stale bread. Letting the mixture sit is important to avoid a soggy pudding.
